Plant-Based Diets

This typically refers to an entirely plant-based or vegan diet. A diet that excludes all foods of animal origin e.g. meat, fish, eggs, dairy, honey and other animal derived ingredients.

  • It consists of a variety of Legumes, Whole Grains, Vegetables, Fruits, Nuts, Seeds and other vegan products.

Other forms of plant-based diets

I tend to extend this definition to other diets that are primarily plant-based (95% plant foods).'

  • Flexi or raretarians; including small or infrequent amounts of animal products

  • Vegetarians; including some eggs and/or dairy products

People eating most plant-based may experience the same challenges as those eating entirely plant-based.

People eliminate animal products typically based on three main factors.

1.       Ethical consideration of animals

Many people who consider the ethics of eating other living beings will choose to avoid consuming animal products. The treatment of animals in food industry and the harsh reality of billions of animals being killed for our consumption results in people eating plant-based to to oppose supporting this industry.

2.       Environmental consideration of animal agriculture

Eating plant-based diet is one of the most powerful things an individual can do to reduce their environmental impact.

3.       Health benefits of a diet rich in plant foods

People may choose to eat plant-based diets in order to reduce instances of disease like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers.

More on health…
A healthy vegan or plant-based diet is one that is appropriately planned and supplemented to ensure we eat all our nutrient requirements. A predominantly whole food plant based diet can be incredibly health promoting if the right foods are prioritised. This means nutrient dense foods like legumes, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds.
